Perimenopause & Menopause- Living With It, Symptoms, & Resources

Hey Everyone! So today's post isn't about books (well I will refer one book). This is going to be a long post but I want to make sure I share everything. This about a subject that thankfully more people are talking about but, I thought I would share my experience and also give you all some resources and products that have really helped me along the journey. I am not a medical professional so please make sure to discuss your options with your doctors like I have but if I can help you in any way with my story and what I've learned I felt that I should share!

So let me start with my age, I am 48 and was given the menopause diagnosis in October of 2024 after 1 year of no periods. I am on the younger side for menopause but it can happen to anyone at any age.

I was 38 when my first symptoms started and I had no clue what was happening. My first symptom was a hot flash and it happened at the worst time. I was on a plane getting ready to take off from Sacramento to LA for the LA Times Festival of Books and all of a sudden I got really overheated and flushed and the overhead air vents weren't on since we hadn't taken off yet. This flash in turn gave me a massive anxiety attack, my mom was on the plane with me and she thought I was going crazy. See the thing is, my mom didn't really experience menopause or peri since she had a full hysterectomy so she had no clue what I was going through and didn't know how to help. I suffered through the flight but was fine by the time we landed. I had a blast at the festival and felt great! Then came the flight home, hot flash again but this time maybe I was expecting it? So my anxiety while it was there it wasn't as bad. Needless to say I haven't been on a plane since.

The first couple years after the hot flash I didn't really experience many more so I thought it was a one off of maybe the plane. But when I turned 40 the symptoms came back and hit me like a Mack truck. Hot flashes, anxiety, trouble sleeping, increased sex drive, acne... so I started to do research and decided to try to treat it naturally since 8 years ago the idea of Hormone Replacement Therapy scared the hell out of me because of all of the misinformation and bad research that had been going around. I will share below what natural supplements that I took  that helped me for years.

At 45 more symptoms appeared, massive dizziness, weight gain, joint pain, hair loss, dry skin, mouth, & eyes, changes in my eyesight, brain fog, sweating, body odor changes... and the natural supplement I was taking stopped working completely. I finally went to my doctor to discuss my issues and he completely wrote me off and so did my OB/Gyn, they tried to prescribe allergy meds for the dizziness, anti depressants and anxiety meds which I refused so, I fired them both and found new doctors. My new doctors are amazing and we discussed HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and I got on the patches right away, the first set helped a bit but after a few months symptoms came back so we tried another patch with a higher dosage and it worked wonders! Hot flashes are rare, my dizziness is gone, anxiety is in check! For some symptoms and I've been using supplements for the others but I am now almost back to my old self!

If you can't find a doctor that will prescribe you HRT check out Dr Mary Claire's recommended physicians list to see if there's any in your area https://thepauselife.com/pages/recommended-physicians or Midi Health- they work with most insurance https://www.joinmidi.com/

What are some perimenopause and menopause symptoms? Lets take a look at this image from Mindset Health this isn't a complete list as they're finding more symptoms as more research happens.

Not everyone is going to experience these symptoms or may only have a few but not me. Going through that list I have had hot flashes, night sweats, bloating, headaches, moos swings, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, joint pain, itchiness, digestion changes, muscle aches, disrupted sleep, thinning hair, weight gain, concentration lapses, brittle nails, dizziness, and body odor changes. I know right? That's A LOT of symptoms!

As I said above in the first paragraph I am not a medical professional so please talk to your doctors and if they dismiss you find ones who will listen. But if your symptoms are bad or you even want to get ahead of it think of asking about HRT the benefits outweigh the risks especially if you don't have a history of breast cancer in your family you can read more here on Dr Mary Claire's website https://thepauselife.com/blogs/the-pause-blog/new-hope-for-menopause-experts-say-hormone-therapy-is-safe-and-effective#:~:text=New%20Hope%20For%20Menopause%3A%20Experts,Mary%20Claire%20Haver

Now here's what you all want. My resources and products I use. I will share links (the amazon ones are my affiliate link. The rest aren't). Also do your research and ask your doctors if you have any medical conditions to see if you can safely take the supplements I will suggest.

First my resource list:

This book and woman are my go to's for all things menopause! She is a board certified OB/Gyn who specializes in menopause care. She is simply amazing!

You can follow her Facebook page here- https://www.facebook.com/drmaryclaire
There's also a Facebook group that has great resources that was inspired by Dr Mary Claire's book- https://www.facebook.com/groups/457872753503759
You can buy the book here- https://amzn.to/43DnaDU

Products: (I tried to find products that were affordable for me since these supplement companies charge crazy amounts for their "special menopause supplements")

Supplements: Ask your doctor if you can take all of these and also check for any drug interactions there may be with any other meds you are taking.

For hot flashes and other symptoms before HRT I used Estroven. I used the mood and memory one, they've rebranded it to just mood but it really did work for me for years. They have a bunch of different ones so you can try them and see what works for you! And they cost less than ones you'll find online https://amzn.to/44jklYT

For stress, anxiety, and sleep issues I take these every night before bed. Qunol Ulltra Magnesium Glycinate Complex -https://amzn.to/4i2UrvF and Nutricost KSM-66 Ashwagandha Root Extract 600mg- https://amzn.to/420E2Dk

For hair, skin, and nails. Sone people prefer the powdered collagen but most of them are pretty pricey so I have been using this. Amazon Basics Type 2 Collagen (also helps for joint pain)- https://amzn.to/4i7O0HR & Amazon Basics Biotin- https://amzn.to/3XO8Nc6 jusy a note none of these really help for my hair loss so I will post what has below.

Now for the hair loss, really all I've found that works is Minoxidil. I use the Her's brand which you can find on Amazon. I find it easier than the Her's website since they make you take a quiz and stuff- https://amzn.to/3XNKdbn

Another thing I take for gut health and flora (helps with odor) is a daily probiotic. https://amzn.to/42e39CV

For Dry Eyes Systane Ultra Lubricant Eye Drops-https://amzn.to/42iI60C and OCuSOFT Lid Scrub PLUS - Pre-Moistened Leave-On Eyelid Wipes- https://amzn.to/4ckZg2a these were both suggested by my eye doctor. I love the wipes for when my eyes are itchy or get the little crusties from sleep too.

Deodorants & body washes. I find Lume does the job for most things. I prefer the creams to the stick deodorants and I love the acidified body washes and bar soaps! They've also added a sweat control line now that I love! You can order some things on Amazon- https://amzn.to/3Ek1fXW but if you want to see it all check out the website-https://lumedeodorant.com/ also make sure to use lotions that don't have alcohol in them as those are drying.

If Lume doesn't work. Go with this heavy hitter! My pits sweat with Lume so I go with Carpe, it definitely works! They also have a great face primer if you worry about a shiny face! You can get Carpe at Amazon- https://amzn.to/4lrPxvo or their website- https://mycarpe.com/

For Acne. I love Burt's Bees it's the only thing that seems to help (btw all of my acne is usually on my chest and neck) you can get that on Amazon- https://amzn.to/3XRwgcp, the Burt's Bees website https://www.burtsbees.com/skin/by-concern/acne/ or stores like CVS, Target, Rite Aid, Walmart, etc.

Extras:

If you need a little extra help for anxiety I love these! I'll slap one one if I know I will be in a situation that might cause anxiety like crowded places or a dentist appt. https://viciwellness.com/collections/vici-wellness-topical-patches/products/nervous-wreck?variant=42038762995942

For when you're running hot. I love this little neck fan-https://amzn.to/42mZXU6 and also this one you can plug into your phone to charge it-https://amzn.to/4lldDHV!

Ok last subject and I hope you all have stuck with me. Sexual health, which I know some people can lose their libido well Dr Mary Claire suggests testosterone or vaginal estrogen which you can talk to your doctor about. Lubricants help and toys can help as well. This is a favorite of mine- https://amzn.to/4cxBYGv

I hope that you made it through the whole post and that some of the things that I have talked about can help you! I'd love to hear from you if you try any of them so shoot me a message on social media or leave a comment!

She thought it was real. She was wrong.

When Sophia wakes up in 15th-century England, she expects hardship—but nothing prepares her for this brutal, unforgiving world. Lost, alone, and desperate to return to her husband and son, she vows to find a way home. But as weeks pass, Sophia finds kinship and purpose in this strange land.

After a violent attack, she takes fate into her own hands, disguising herself as a man to train under Henry, the castle’s enigmatic master-at-arms. As steel clashes and their connection deepens, forbidden desire ignites.

Yet Henry is not the knight he claims to be. His real name is Ethan, and this is the least of the lies he tells her. Falling for Sophia was never part of the plan—but the closer they become, the more he realises how wrong it is to keep her in the dark.

As danger closes in and the lines between reality and deception blur, Sophia must uncover the truth about Henry—and herself—before she runs out of time.

Outlander meets Black Mirror in this sizzling dark time travel romance.

*Warning: strong language, steamy scenes, and graphic violence inside. Mention/Description of, but not limited to, abduction, blood, death, amputation, childbirth, death, sexual assault, suicide, violence against children, rape, and torture.*

The book is the first in a duology and ends with a cliffhanger.

Top 5 favorite Video Games. (Jaime here. I’m going to comment on some of the games since I love them too!)

I don’t play video games much on my own—I’d rather curl up with a book—but when I do, I love diving into deep, choice-driven RPGs with my partner. And honestly? Some of these games tell better stories with better plot twists than most movies today. Here are my top five favourites:

1. Baldur’s Gate 3

Co-op adventures don’t get better than this. The storytelling, the choices (often between bad and worse), and the ability to shape your character’s fate—it’s everything I love in a game. Plus, playing with my partner makes every decision feel even more intense. Should we save the innocent villager… or loot their corpse for a better sword? Tough choices.

2. Divinity: Original Sin 2

Another fantastic co-op RPG where every decision matters. The turn-based combat is incredible, but it’s the story that hooked me—political intrigue, betrayal, and moments where I just sat there, controller in hand, thinking, Did we really just do that? The freedom to roleplay and shape the world is unmatched.

3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I still remember watching my partner play this during COVID, completely absorbed in the world. The expansion Blood and Wine, set in a medieval, South-of-France-inspired land, felt like a virtual holiday when we were all stuck at home. The game nails morally grey choices, and Geralt’s world is both brutal and beautiful.

Jaime- Agree with all of the above! I LOVE The Witcher 3 so much so that I’ve played it twice and it’s a long game lol. I love the stories and all of the fun side missions!

4. Cyberpunk 2077

Dystopian, heartbreaking, and packed with impossible choices—what’s not to love? The story pulled me in completely, and the setting is just stunning. It’s one of those games where you sit there after finishing it, staring at the screen, unsure what to do with yourself.

5. Horizon Zero Dawn

The blend of post-apocalyptic sci-fi and ancient landscapes is breathtaking, and Aloy’s journey is one of my favourite in gaming. The twists! The mystery behind the world kept me hooked, and the giant robot dinosaurs were just a bonus!

Jaime- This and Horizon Forbidden West are 2 of my all-time favorite games! I love them so much that Aloy is my Playstation Avatar.

Oh, and Ghost of Tsushima deserves a shout-out—those stunning Japanese landscapes were pure balm for my soul.

Jaime- This is one of the mist visually stunning games I have ever played! I will replay it from time to time just so I can see the beautiful scenery. Also if you’re a Ghost fan give Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Rise of the Ronin a try. They’re both set in feudal Japan and are equally beautiful and super fun!

About Eliza Hampstead:

Award-winning author Eliza Hampstead is a scientist by training but a storyteller at heart. When she’s not lost in writing (or researching obscure medieval facts she swears are relevant to the plot), she’s fully embracing her geeky side—whether that’s strategising over a board game, getting emotionally invested in an RPG, or conquering virtual worlds.

A lifelong fantasy lover, she’s always dreaming up her next adventure—both on the page and in real life. If time travel were possible, she’d already be in medieval England, probably getting into trouble with a sword. Until then, she’ll settle for writing stories filled with forbidden love, surprising twists, and just the right amount of spice.

"Merging lively action and intrepid, engaging characters, Fedorak deftly teases and reveals political, social, and medical conspiracies that have far-reaching consequences for the entire planet. With some twists and turns, she creates an authentic world of near-future science and thought-provoking issues related to designer babies, corporate accountability, and familial commitment. A provocative page-turner." — Booklife Editor's Pick

"Libraries seeking epic fantasies that build upon prior books in a solid, compelling manner will find Origins Progeny a delightfully complex, thoroughly engrossing acquisition. Interview:

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about your book and the characters?
Origins Progeny is the second book in my speculative fiction series, Children of Alpheios which is about how a society centered around biotechnology impacts my protagonist, Alina, and her closest relationships. The ideas I explore include designer babies, artificial reproduction, regenerative medicine, and directed evolution. I was thrilled that it became an Editors Pick from the Booklife reviewers at Publishers Weekly.

Alina is an expeditionary explorer, genetically engineered, with a young son who has a DNA anomaly making him unique. She’d previously fled the city of Alpheios to keep him safe. In Origins Progeny, she returns home to her ailing mother and pursues a cure. In returning, she’s also facing a strained relationship with her mother, as well as decisions she made previously, regarding her son’s father, Chance. She has no choice but to team up with him since he’s a Guardian Officer who can assure her safe passage through the city and facilitate meetings with people who may be able to help her mother. At this point, she’s also engaged to her fiancé, Kiean, so a love triangle emerges in the story as a sub-plot.

What are you working on now?

My final book in the series. It’ll be a trilogy.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

My male characters, Kiean and Chance, are an amalgamation of coworkers from my previous career in the Air Force. I was used to be outnumbered as a woman.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
The first book was all from Alina’s point-of-view, but in Origins Progeny, I wrote some chapters from Chance’s point-of-view. While Alina is still the heroine, Chance was fun to write because previous events left a lasting impact on him, and his character arc is a question mark for the reader in how he’ll develop. He keeps me on my toes.

For the least favorite, there’s a Doctor Daxmen in the book, a mad scientist type, who’s not a very good person.

What is your favorite passage/scene in your book? There’s a scene where Alina and Chance just escaped a violent situation and take refuge in his apartment. She’s stuck there and can’t stand him, so we read about her dealing with it. The last few paragraphs at the ending are also a favorite, but I won’t spoil it.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story? I researched stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine. This involved media articles, videos of genetic reprogramming, patients undergoing surgery, and scientific research articles. I wanted to understand how stem cells work, how your body produces them, and the promise that this therapy can repair damaged or diseased tissue.

I was listening to a podcast with a regenerative medicine doctor who described advancements in this type of medicine, and how rich people were flying out to the UAE where they could undergo this therapy to stave off the effects of aging. I knew I had to include this in my story since most of us do not have access to that kind of medicine. I discovered stem cells are difficult to produce on a mass scale. You usually have to use your own body’s stem cells for the treatment.

Recently, the news reported the UAE opened a stem cell research center of excellence that hopes to be the global leader in regenerative medicine. There’s definitely promise here in curing disease, but I also look at people using it to live longer in Origins Progeny.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read? I read House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas last year. I really loved its cover from its B&N exclusive edition. It was funny because I bought it right before a trip, and the flight attendant stopped by to chat about it. I should have bought its sequel, House of Sky and Breath at the same time because by the time I was ready to read it, they were mostly sold out. I just found the right edition, and it’s next on my TBR.

Favorite social media site? Instagram. I like the aesthetic, and it’s more relaxing than other sites.

Favorite Superhero or Villain? I grew up with Lynda Carter twirling in my living room. Definitely Wonder Woman.

Favorite TV show? I just finished watching Silo, season 2 on Apple TV. It was terrific.

Sweet or Salty? Sweet. Preferably, chocolate.

Any Phobias? No skydiving. I won’t jump out of perfectly good aircraft.

Song you can’t get enough of right now? Guilty as Sin by Taylor Swift. I’m a Swiftie.

2025 Movie you’re most looking forward to? Dune 3, but I hear that’s not out until 2026. I have eclectic tastes; so it’s Bridget Jones-I’m Mad About the Boy this year. I loved the original book!

Do you play video games? If so what are some of your favorites? Not lately, but I crushed Donkey Kong as a kid.
